My heart is heavy tonight in what has transpired today. You department has 2 lives tonight with 2 members still recovering. However your whole department is in my thoughts and prayers, not only the members but the families as well. We all know it is just not those that sacrifice their lives that this affects but family friends and those you have never met. I am proud to be part of a community that will mourn and help each other in this desperate time of need. West Webster will over come their loss never to forget what happened today and will continue to serve the community with the dedication and pride that each first responder has ingrained in their DNA. Not all can do the job that you do and for that I say THANK YOU.
Lorraine Rizzo Says:
MY FIRST CHRISTMAS IN HEAVEN
I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below. With tiny lights, like Heaven’s stars, reflecting on the snow.
The sight is so spectacular, please wipe away the tear. For I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.
I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear. But the sounds of music can’t compare with the Christmas choir up here.
I have no words to tell you, the joy their voices bring. For it is beyond description, to hear the angels sing.
I know how much you miss me. I see the pain inside your heart. But I am not so far away. We really aren’t apart.
So be happy for me, dear ones. You know I hold you dear. And be glad I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.
I sent you each a special gift, from my heavenly home above. I sent you each a memorty of my undying love.
After all, love is a gift more precious than pur gold. It was always most important in the stories Jesus told.
Please love and keep each other, as my Father said to do. For I can’t count the blessings or love He has for each of you.
So have a Merry Christmas and wipe away that tear. Remember, I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.
(This poem was written by a 13 yr old boy who died of a brain tumor that he had battled for four years. He died on December 14, 1997. He gave this to his Mom before he died. His name was Ben.)
For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. LUKE 2:11

Bobby Chiuchiolo Says:
The horrific act of a mad man shooting at volunteer firefighters responding to a working fire really bothers me. Add to the fact that 2 brother fire fighters were killed + 2 more wounded by this unbelievable chain of events saddens me deeply & has me wondering WHY? Why did this happen to the West Webster fireman and not members of another Fire dept in the state of NY?
I keep having thoughts of how devasted I would be if any of my 3 sons, my cousins, or any of my closest friends responding to a working fire were killed by an ambush trying to do what we are trained to do. That is; without reguard for ourselves, protect life & property. Its bad enough when one of our brothers dies from the dangers of responding & working at an alarm. It is so much more when another danger, such as an armed gunman, is added to the scene.
A few days before Christmas, in 1980, one of my closest friends was killed in a ambulance accident while treating a patient with a gun shoot going to the hospital. The accident & loss was very difficult. At that time, I aked the Lord why him & not me because almost every Sunday evening in the weeks before my friend died, I was the EMT standing by the fire house. The Sunday night of the accident, in 1980, I took the night off to watch a movie with my dad & my friend was there. He went on the call & never came home. Why? Why? Why?
Thus, my deepest sympathy goes out to the families & the fireman of West Webster FD as I ask 32 years later: Why? Why? Why?

There are so many individuals effected by one mad man. Family, freinds, fellow firefighters, EMT’s, Law enforcement. These are good people whose lives are now changed forever because of a sensless act. He will have his judegment day and will be given a sentence that he well deserves. IF any good came of this it is that one less mad man is roaming the earth. To the families of the two fallen firefighters I express my deepest sympathy. I have lost too many this year (including my wife)and I am glad the year is ending. I only wish it had not have to end on such a sad note. Let us all pray that the last week of the year will be peaceful with no violance and killings. We have had enough and so many that made no sense. 20 childern and teachers, 2 volunteer firefighters going to help save lives, and on and on and on. God bless those fallen heros and thier families. God look over the recovering firefighters in the hospital and bring them home quickley. And last God look over the rest of us and please give us some guideance since we have really lost our way. “Job well done my values and trusted servents” Rest in Peace.

Jill C. Tompkins Says:
The events that unfolded yesterday were so extremely sad and distracting. The overwhelming feelings that I felt while learning about the tragedy and with all the updates just took the joy right out the holiday for me. My heart goes out to all the families directly affected by the horrific day. I think it took something from so many yesterday and if I could tell all the heros in this event how grateful and appreciated their hard work and dedication is and they will never be forgotten. My thoughts were with each and everyone of them yesterday and today and in many days to come. Again, even though there are no words to take away any of the suffering, please know there are people out here that really do care and if I could do anything to ease the pain, I certainly would. This was so senseless, and now we have to try to find something that makes sense from this?? Its hard to wrap my head around.
Mark Says:
Fireman’s Prayer
When I am called to duty, God
whenever flames may rage,
Give me the strength to save some life

Enable me to be alert
And hear the weakest shout,
And quickly and efficiently
to put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling

To guard my neighbor
And protect his property.
And if according to Your will
I have to lose my life,
Please bless with Your protecting hand
My children and my wife.

A Fireman’s’ Gloves
A fireman’s gloves hold many things
From elderly arms to a kids broken swing
From the hand they shake and the back they pat
To the tiny claw marks of another treed cat
At 2am they are filled with chrome
From the DUI who was on her way home
And the equipment they use to roll back the dash
From the family she involved in that crash
The brush rakes in spring, wear the palms out
When the wind does a 90 to fill them with doubt
The thumb of the glove wipes the sweat from the brow
Of the face of a fireman who mutters What Now?
They hold an inch and three quarters flowing one twenty five
So the ones going in, come back alive
When the regulators ring; then there isn’t too much
But the bypass valve the eagerly clutch
The rescue equipment, the ropes, the C collars
The lives they saved never measured in dollars
Are the obvious things a fireman’s gloves hold
Or so that is what I’ve always been told
But there are other things those gloves touch
Those are the things we all need so much
The hold back the rage on that 3am call
They hold in the fear when you’ve lost the wall
They hold back the pity, agony, sorrow
They hold in the desire to do it tomorrow.
A glove, just a glove till it’s on a firefighter
Who worked all day just to pull an all nighter
And into the fray they charge without fear
At the sound of help they think they hear.
Off comes the gloves when the call is done
And into the pocket until the next run
The hands become lonely and cold for a bit
And even shake just thinking of it
They’re not so brave now; their hands they can’t hind
I guess it just means they are human inside
And though some are paid and others are not
The gloves fell the same when its cold or its hot
To someone you’re helping to just get along
When you fill them with love, you always feel strong
And so when I go on my final big ride
I hope to have my gloves close by my side
To show to St. Peter at the heavenly Gates
Cause as we all know, Firefighters just don’t wait

We are taught scene safety first, but never expect to be shot at and killed when responding to a fire call. May they rest in peace! Stephen Niles Says:
WHO AM I? I I AM THE ONE:
Who comes to your home in the middle of the night,
Who responds to car accidents,
Who faces the bitter cold,
Who braves the intense heat,
Who searches for your child,
Who performs CPR,
Who rescues an animal,
Who goes into a burning building when all others are coming out,
Who constantly trains to save lives,
Who is on duty seven days a week,
Who sometimes doesn’t see family for days because of an emergency,
Who visits your children at school to talk about fire safety,
Who you see every day but you don’t know my name,
Who doesn’t get paid fore my service,
Who is proud of what I do for you and my community,
I am the one who will give my life to save yours,
WHO AM I? I AM A VOLUNTEER!!!
